Melba Liston “You Dont Say”

This song begins with a drum solo to lead into the head which including the trumpet, drums, and electric guitar.  The Trumpet is a playing a short quick pattern. The drums and guitar in the background set the rhythm and pulse of the head where the trumpet plays for melody. The head seems very consonant and in a major character. This leads smoothly into the next ensemble.

In the beginning of the next ensemble the trumpet begins in a higher key than the last while changing to a slightly longer pattern. The Guitar also plays a different pattern also. The two seem to play off one another by when one changes it’s pattern the other follows. This ensemble leads to the next ensemble which is a trumpet solo with the drums playing rhythm in the background. Halfway through this solo the trumpet begins playing in a higher key. Also throughout this solo the guitar makes a quick appearance and then pauses and repeats. After the trumpet begins in a higher key the next ensemble starts.

In the next ensemble the trumpet has taken over the melody with the trumpet and guitar playing the rhythm in the background still. The trumpet plays in a high major character. The trumpet pauses for the guitar to begin with a quick break solo which leads to the final ensemble.

The final ensemble repeats the head and finishes with the trumpet playing one long note as the drummer plays a drum roll.
